Konn Lavery Launches His New Edmonton-Based Horror Novel Seed Me

konn-laveryAuthor Konn Lavery is releasing his new horror novel titled Seed Me on July 15th. Previously Konn had joined me discussing his dark fantasy series.

Konn, can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your new book?

Thanks for having me back Simon! I am a writer by passion and a graphic designer/web developer by trade. I’ve had a lot of exciting things in the works since we last chatted. My new novel Seed Me is being released this summer on July 15th, with a live book reading at Happy Harbor Comics on August 17th. In addition it has a complimentary musical score that goes along with the story titled World Mother: Seed Me Novel Score which was released on July 2nd.

What is different about Seed Me from the Mental Damnation series?

The Seed Me novel takes place in modern-time-Edmonton with a first person tongue-and-cheek narrative from the protagonist, Logan. Mental Damnation provided a third-person present tense narrative style, giving the reader a godlike view of the story. Seed Me is also a stand-alone novel unlike the Mental Damnation novels which are part of an ongoing series. The plot is shrouded in mystery as Logan and his friends try to uncover who is behind the famous 420 Drain Murder while struggling with drug addiction, the living dead and cultists.

The beta readers of the book have quoted it being a “modern folktale” and a “Goosebumps story for adults”. The Mental Damnation seed-me-novel-coverseries does appeal to a wider age range from the intertwining plots and characters. Seed Me will most likely be enjoyed by fans of the horror genre and the works of H.P. Lovecraft and Clive Barker.

What was the inspiration to write a horror novel based in Edmonton?

The concept came to me back in 2013 but was a completely different plot with different characters. The only resemblance it had were the villains and the setting in Edmonton and the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market. I had spent a lot of time in the river valley during the days and nights both in the summer and winter and can say there is a lot of amazing and wild things you can find if you dig far enough. I thought to myself “Wouldn’t this make for a great horror story?” That’s where the idea for Seed Me was born.

The plot itself evolved once I participated in NaNoWriMo of 2014 reaching 50,000 words followed by numerous heavy manuscript revamps. The story itself was a way for me to push myself out of my writing comfort zone. I really don’t want to get stuck in a specific writing style or genre because then I would never learn to become a better writer.

You mentioned a musical score that goes with the album, can you tell us about that?

The book has a musical score based on the chapters found within the story. I worked with several musicians (Sean Lacroix, Apollyon’s Visage and Voice Industrie) throughout the city wa0485110317_16ho had a style that matched the music I was listening to while writing the novel.

From an early age I have always had an interest in transmedia storytelling. My previous Mental Damnation novels included a lot of abstract illustrations, glyphs and an alphabet that could be decoded. Seed Me has taken my writing into new territories by introducing audio. The album’s purpose is to cross bridges with the musical and literary worlds by telling a complete story through both forms of media, creating a more immersive experience.

Where can readers find your new novel Seed Me?

The books are currently available to order in eBook format on Amazon, Kobo and Google Play. The physical copies will be print on demand from Amazon and will also be available at Happy Harbor Comics during the launch on August 17th with the live reading.
