The Memory Bank – Prisoners of the Prism

Chapter One

The Empty Room

Claudia Woodville and Harry Kruger burst into the prism room at the Woodville Labs warehouse, but it was empty.
“Where are they?” Claudia demanded. “You said on the way that they were just in here.”
“I don’t know,” said Harry, frantically looking around the room. “They were definitely in here, on camera.”
“They can’t have just vanished,” said Claudia. “Where did they go?”
Harry thought for a moment.
“It’s only a theory, but they could be in the prism.”
“What?” Claudia gasped.
She shook her head.
“What do you mean?” she said, still not fully understanding. “What do you mean, in the prism?”
“They could now be in the memories of all the people that we stored in there,” replied Harry.
“What?” Claudia repeated. “In that bizarre dream world, lost in all those different memories, just like where we’ve been sending the boy to have those
experiences to get him to help us?”
“Perhaps,” Harry replied. “But like I said, it’s just a theory. I can’t be sure and it’s just speculation. Nothing like this has ever happened before.”
Claudia frowned.
“Alright, what makes you think they’re in the prism world somehow? What’s this theory based on.”
“Well,” Harry replied, “you’d never believe it, but the girl stepped out of the mirror into the boy’s room like she was simply stepping through a doorway. Then they held hands, and both stepped through the glass and vanished. It’s most likely the girl was hoping to return to where she’d come from when they stepped into the mirror, but they ended up here instead. It’s all there on the footage.”
“But why here?” Claudia questioned him.
“Perhaps because of the boy’s recent links to the prism?” Harry replied.
Claudia thought for a moment.
“But then you say the cameras picked them up in here and now they’re gone. Why do you think they could have gone into the prism?”
“Well, I don’t know the exact nature of the girl’s powers,” Harry replied. “But if she needs a glass surface to operate there’s nothing like a mirror or even a window in here.”
“So, in that case the prism would be the only means of escape,” said Claudia.
Harry nodded.
“That’s my theory, but it’s just an idea.”
“Or could they have escaped to wherever the girl came from?” Claudia asked him. “Back to her home or something?”
“Maybe,” Harry replied. “I need to review the footage from in here and that from the boy’s room again. It might take a while.”
“We don’t have a while, Harry,” Claudia told him, firmly. “I just need to check some emails at my office but let me know as soon as you have anything, anything at all. I want to see that footage from the boy’s room again and from in here as well.”
And with that she turned on her heel and left.
